Over the years, this event has become a kind of tradition. A tradition that takes place during the last weekend of September. When you can discover the food and the wines of Giglio Island. This is the 2016 edition of the Festa dell’uva e delle cantine aperte (literally, “fest of wine and open cellars”), from September 29th to October 1st (dates to be confirmed).
The real protagonist of the event will be, of course, the Ansonaco (or Ansonico), a dry and very tasty white wine. It is an excellent wine to drink with fish recipes, vegetable soups, molluscs, and crustaceans.
And these are some of the typical dishes of Giglio Island: other recipes are cacciucco, tonnina sott’olio and palamita alla gigliese. During this weekend, the cellars of Giglio Castello become real “grotte del gusto” (literally, “caves of flavours”), where you can taste the culinary specialties of the island.
The heart of Giglio Island
Here is Giglio Castello. It’s an ancient medieval village with a very enchanting atmosphere. The Rocca aldobrandesca (a castle) is very imposing. In the evening, the view from Giglio Castello is really amazing.
How to get there
From Giglio Porto (where ferries to Giglio Island dock), take via Provinciale Castello to Giglio Castello. The journey by car or by motorcycle takes about fifteen minutes.
